If you’re an employer you’ll understand the importance of Health & Safety in the workplace and how important it is to be aware of potential hazards.
Although it is virtually impossible to totally eradicate all hazards there are ways in which you can manage these hazards and to ensure the safety of your staff.
To try and minimize the risks you should look at the following areas carefully:
- Are your employees adequately trained and their knowledge of a high standard?
- Are there any problems with the tools that are currently being used?
- Is the forklift of an acceptable age?
- Is the forklift adequately maintained?
Any issues that usually occur fall in to one of two categories 1) human error 2) mechanical error. If as an employer you can have plans in place for both types of issue you can effectively safeguard against such problems occurring. Obviously it is impossible to irradicate all risks but you can go some way towards limiting most of them.
The first job as an employer, once all plans are in place, is to make sure that all staff are aware of the plans. Staff training sessions are paramount in ensuring that all staff are up to date, have a sound knowledge and understand the maintenance of forklift trucks and machinery. It is also important that staff have refresher training, as bad habits and loss of knowledge can soon develop and by jogging their memories it will help reinstate in good habits.
It is also important that all machinery is kept up to date, if it isn’t it should be taken care of or replaced.
Keeping staff up to date on new legislation and putting them through refresher courses is advised and Forklift Agency are able to assist with this. Forklift Agency offer novice and refresher training, which is also Health and Safety approved so why not get in touch and take the first steps to improving safety in your workplace.
