Forklift Reverse Sensor Assessment

It isn’t uncommon for Forklift accidents to happen in a workplace be it a collision with a member of staff, another forklift or even with storage. Obviously, the most serious of these collisions are those where a life is involved and safety in the workplace must always be paramount.

With more than 500 incidents being reported to HSE every year the visibility from a Forklift truck is imperative and so with that in mind there is a review taking place to reduce the rate of collisions.

Measures to help a drivers’ vision include mirrors and sensors including ultrasonic, radar, and Radio Frequency Identification, very similar to the ones you’d find on road vehicles, as well as CCTV systems which are operator reliant. There is also the possibility of altering the position in which the forklift operator is situated.

The full report carried out by the HSE gives great detail about the sensors, both ultrasonic and radar which are commonly used to prevent collisions. The fact that these collisions could be prevented by the use of radars which will apply the brakes when an obstruction is detected is great news however, the downside came when the tests were carried out that proved that the radars don’t always detect a pedestrian. Not only that, but the radars need to be sophisticated enough to recognise an obstruction rather than just the workplace surroundings.

It is down to individual companies to give consideration to the extra safety measures required in an individual workplace however they are encouraged to be proactive rather than reactive. It is also necessary that all operators are adequately trained as well as put through refresher training regularly to avoid falling into bad habits.
