Forklift Thorough Examination
It’s easy to get caught up with every day working life and how quick paced it is, however, safety should always be at the top of the list especially when it comes to Forklift Truck maintenance.
Forklift users should be familiar with a ‘Thorough Examination’. This term is used to describe the mandatory and essential check that a Forklift Truck should go through to ensure that it is in safe, working order; think of it as a Forklift MOT.
It’s important not to get this confused with regular maintenance checks, which should also be done on a regular basis, but this is a requirement by law. This Thorough Examination means that you’ll be covered by two different sets of Health and Safety regulations LOLER98 and PUWER 98.
LOLER 98 is the regulation that cover the upkeep of the lifting parts of a Forklift Truck, and PUWER 98 covers areas such as braking and steering.
Unless the forklift truck is on hire for less than a 12-month period from a leasing company then it is the responsibility of the owner (or the company/individual leasing, should it be on more than 12-month lease) to ensure that the thorough examination is carried out. The Report of Thorough Examination should be kept with a Forklift’s paperwork.
The British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) along with Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) and HAS, came together to form the CFTS. The CFTS aims to deliver the quality controlled process of Thorough Examination and currently there are 450 companies nationwide that are qualified to carry out the Thorough Examination (look for companies displaying the distinctive Kite Mark).
