For as long as most people have been employed within the forklift sector, the issue with batteries and the management of them has been a task that most didn’t look forward to.
Although, over the past ten years, things have improved significantly it has also been a time where the price of batteries has doubled and the efficiency of fleets within the sector has been questioned.
As with looking after a forklift fleet, it is important that the batteries are maintained and although it is possible to get five years out of a conventional lead-acid battery there is the chance that should the battery not be maintained properly, then this will shorten the life of the battery.
There is an option however that will save the time taken, as well as the future costs, of maintaining lead-acid batteries and that is to look at replacing the fleet with an alternative battery namely a fuel cell, which is lithium-ion and thin plate pure lead, essentially swapping battery changing for charging.
Avoiding the maintenance of batteries can sound very appealing and the owners of fleets of forklifts will need to weigh up the pros and cons of swapping from conventional batteries to charging options. A charger and battery will last for five years and although they are a more expensive option, it will cut down on continued maintenance.
Although the maintenance will be cut down in terms of batteries, it’s still important to ensure that all forklift operators are up to date when it comes to operator training.
