New Forklift User Rules for Handling Flammable Waste

matches and fire

New regulations have been announced for those who operate a forklift truck and are required to move flammable waste. This will particularly apply to those who are employed at solvents recovery and waste treatment plants.
Those employed at waste management sites handle high volumes of flammable materials all with different flashpoints, temperature classes and characteristics. The risk of fire and explosion is always present but safety regulations are always being reviewed to ensure the safety of staff and good working practices.
Although the waste management industry is already highly regulated, there are changes set to come into effect for forklift trucks in November 2017.
The biggest changes will apply where companies operate 2.5-3 tonne capacity diesel forklifts in their Zone 2 drum or IBC storage areas. EN1755:2015 will now replace EN1755:2000 which outlines the EU standard that explosion protected materials handling equipment is designed or converted to, in order to achieve ATEX 2014/34/EU compliance.
Static build up and friction can create enough energy to cause ignition and so extra care must be taken in order to comply with new regulations. It’s not only the requirements for tyres that are being considered in the new changes but other parts of a forklift truck too such as seats, arm rests, cabin sides and hydraulic systems.
There will be more in-depth advice and new rules to adhere to in the forthcoming changes but as always, maintaining and operating a Forklift safely should be standard practice.
To ensure that you or your staff are working to high and safe operating standards, all employees should be put on refresher courses to continue good operating standards. If you require any help with training and refresher courses Forklift Agency are here to help.
