With so many accidents involving forklift trucks happening every year in the UK, then there has never been a better time to consider the safety and legislation surrounding forklifts and the associated legislation.
Many accidents in the workplace are down to a lack of sufficient training, operator error and lack of knowledge, equipment or both in the working environment. Other reasons established are poor truck maintenance, unsuitable premises and working environments including poor lighting.
It is therefore important that there is legislation that applies when it comes to using forklift trucks in the workplace and both employers as well as operators should be aware of. This legislation includes the following;
- The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
- The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
- The Noise at Work Regulations
- The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations
- The Provision and Use of Workplace Equipment Regulations
- The Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations
Anyone operating a forklift should have been provided with adequate training and should be at least of school leaving age prior to being provided with the training.
Training should be provided in the correct environment and not in a workplace ‘on the job’. Once the training has been carried out, it is recommended that the new operator is supervised initially on the job to ensure operator competence and reduce the risk of any accidents or incidents taking place.
Operators should always wear seat belts or restraints and wear suitable clothing on the job, and ensure that the safety checks are carried out prior to operating a forklift. All working areas should be free of clutter or obstructions, operating surfaces should be as flat as possible and also free of pedestrians.
