There are plenty of businesses that make modifications to the forklifts they have on fleet however, unless the modifications are going to be professionally done it is worth thinking twice about.
Although most people are aware that any type of vehicle or machinery in a workplace can pose a danger to staff, any modifications to a vehicle can cause further potential hazards which may cause serious injury or even death.
Not only is there the safety aspect to consider, there is also the fact that any modifications can in fact invalidate the warranty of a vehicle.
Any Forklift modifications that are not factory approved may affect the stability, capacity or even safety aspects on a truck. A company may not be aware of the consequences should a modification go wrong and in turn their responsibilities and liabilities.
The Forklift Truck Association (FLTA) have raised concerns about unauthorised modifications in the past and have stated “Unauthorised modifications or repairs – even changing tyres – could invalidate rental contracts or manufacturer warranties, leaving users to foot repair bills.”
The most common modifications carried out that are unauthorised are;
- Drive-in wrack
- Mast reductions
- Truck head guard
Other modifications such as the forks on a counterbalance affecting stability, fork-mounted access platforms used regularly and routinely, as well as hoists mounted on overhead guards which impedes visibility and reduces strength.
The advice being given is that if there are any modifications that are required to be carried out, then always have them done at a manufacturer approved centre.
