There are so many reasons that fork lift accidents happen each year in the workplace however, many of them are due to human error rather than mechanical error.

The way in which employees conduct themselves has a major impact of a maintaining and safe working environment and with the right training and ensuring the staff are put onto refresher courses the risk of accidents is greatly reduced.

Another factor that is key in the safe operation is keeping within a safe speed when operating a fork lift and ensuring that operators are aware of limits and restrictions.

Fork lift trucks are not designed to travel at speed and the steering and braking on a fork lift varies considerably to that of a motor vehicle. Travelling at excessive speed can cause a fork lift to become unstable risking the load to shed from the forks or worse still, the fork lift to topple over.

Although there is no specific limits to the speed a fork lift should be operated at, common sense should be used. As a guide, 3mhp in racking is considered safe, 5mph in transit aisles and 10mph in a workplace yard. This should be used only as a guide and this may vary depending upon the business and from location to location.

Fork lift maintenance is crucial and all operators should carry out daily checks before beginning operation of a fork life.
